Read with your pets. They can provide lots of comfort and something to occupy yourself with to get through the boring parts of a book.
If you have younger siblings, you could read a book to them. It could be a nice time to forget about everything else and bond with your sibling and just talk and interact with another human being.
Try to read a physical book. Considering how much time we already spend in school, it's probably best to rest your eyes from the bright screen and not have to remind yourself of the zoom classes you attend everyday.
Dig through your bookshelves and try reading an old book. It could be one that you've already read, and it can help relive some past memories before quarantine to hopefully lighten your mood.
Maybe, if you really feel up to it, you could read your dad's untouched book about linear algebra, or your mom's cooking book for vitamix. You could steal a lot of your mom's recipes and make them for yourselves when your parents aren't home.
Half way through winter it has finally snowed more than 1 inch. You could make yourself some hot chocolate and sit out in the soft snow as you read. It might be best to bring thick pants and wear a few layers of socks so you don't get your feet wet.
A lot of these activities paired with reading can help you relieve stress and forget about school for an hour. There are a lot more things that you can do and think of yourself. Reading is a great way to relax and have fun!
Great post! This is a really relevant topic, as you implied in your description of our screen oriented, stressful lives. You have some fun tips; I certainly enjoy reading physical books more than PDFs or on Kindle. I'll keep this in mind as I read :)
ReplyDeleteNice ideas! I've found reading a physical book makes the experience feel much better too.
ReplyDeleteYou really hit the nail on the head with this post. While I've tried a few of these before (who knew my dad's graphical analysis could be so interesting?) I certainly haven't tried them all, so I'll need to get on that.
ReplyDeleteI found this post hilarious and helpful. In a life of monotony, it would be very beneficial to try to jazz up reading. You are absolutely correct that you don't just have to read in a new place for it to be more entertaining, but also the selection of books you read that can affect your enjoyment.
ReplyDeleteThis article is has both a subtle aspect of humor, but is also incredibly accurate. While I have not done some of these listed (reading out in the snow), I imagine they must be fun... Either way, nice post!
ReplyDeleteTaking time to read and relax is important, I will have to try some of the things you mentioned in the article. A goal of mine has been to read some old books on my shelf that I haven't yet, unfortunately I have not accomplished it.
ReplyDeleteI have been reading a lot more lately, and noticed that it sometimes becomes tedious, when it really should be fun. I appreciate all of these suggestions, I will keep them in mind!
ReplyDeleteThese are some fantastic recommendations. Unfortunately, I'm lazy and my brother hates me. Also, the sun burns me because I'm 1/3 vampire. As such, I think I'll stick to reading in solitude while slowly killing my eyes.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I found this very funny since how I've been reading is like the complete opposite from your recommendations. I am a only child with not pets and all the books I've read until now are online. Seeing as how little I am reading now, I should probably follow your advices to enjoy more books.
ReplyDeleteThese were some really nice ideas! I have been so bored lately with the same cycle of activities I have been doing day after day maybe I'll try some of these.
ReplyDeleteI really agree with the read a real book one. I try to buy paperbacks of all the books I read because I just like the feeling of sitting down and holding a tangible book. I also think it helps engage yourself a little bit more because you tend to read in your own voice which I find entertaining.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with reading an old book. I have read some of the old books I used to read back in elementary school and it was very entertaining. I also am revisiting some old movies that I watched and it was really great to somewhat have a "Deja-vu" while you revisit your old favorites.
